These individuals can participate in work experiences, both in our donation processing areas and on the sales floor. At our Goodwill stores, we frequently collaborate with local agencies and vocational rehabilitation programs to create valuable opportunities for individuals with various challenges, including physical, mental health, and intellectual disabilities. Most of this new traffic comes, as I mentioned before, from people looking for places other than stores and eBay where the prices were already insane.Creating opportunities & Transforming LivesĬome and explore our two Goodwill stores in McAllen, Texas, where each visit is an opportunity to unearth treasures while making a positive impact on our community. Still, looking at overall traffic and the number of bids on cameras now compared to years ago it is clear that the site is now far more popular, and as more and more people hear that you used to be able to get a good deal on cameras, more and more people go there, and more and more people bid, and prices go up. Actively driving up prices on a platform that was helping them obtain cheap cameras would be quite counterproductive, and most probably weren't sharing their knowledge of where to get cameras cheap. Even those "flipping" a camera at a premium on another site without actually putting any work or money into fixing or restoring would still want to get the camera at the lowest possible price. Resellers profit margins require buying at the lowest possible price and selling at the highest possible price. Over the last few years the same factors have caused that effect to trickle over to other models. The same was true for other specific cameras. First it started with a noticeable increase in bids to the "popular" and "well known" models, and you started to see things like a K100 that used to go for $25 with a lens routinely going for over 4 times that body only just because people knew about it and heard that it was "the best camera for someone starting out", when in reality there are many other similar if not better cameras that offer the exact same things. I have used that sire for at least the last 8 or 9 years or so, and this really started probably 3-4 years ago at least. It hasn't just been over the last year or so though. When that happened, the same people paying crazy prices in stores or driving the crazy bidding on eBay started doing the same thing on shop goodwill. As people that already knew about shopgoodwill let other people know about it, who let other people know about it, etc, etc, if became much more well known and more trafficked. Second, because prices in brick and mortar stores and now eBay are so inflated, people are looking anywhere they can to get a deal. I have bought probably 20-30 cameras there in years past for what I would consider reasonable prices (ie not the insane prices that have been driven up by the recent popularity of film), but two big things have happened.įirst, you have a relatively recent and sudden rise in trendiness of film photography introducing a bunch of new people to analogue, with many of the newcomers knowing little about the medium or in many cases, the cameras they are buying, which in turn leads any more "well known" cameras models to fetch prices well above their relative worth (see people paying hundreds of dollars for a K100) just because they are the ones that people seem to recommend the most, because, again, they are the ones people know the most about. Because it used to be a "secret" that you could find "good deals" there.
